ABOUT SUNTAG

Suntag evolved out of the Fisheries Queensland managed tagging program in the mid 1980s, where it moved from being managed by government to a volunteer program.  Over the following forty years over a million stories have been created across Australia with volunteer programs in place in Queensland, Northern Territory, South Australia and Western Australia.

For the Queensland program around 20,000 fish are tagged annually with detailed reports produced on 21 Estuary regions and 28 Stocked Impoundments making it one of the most comprehensive sources of fisheries independent data in Australia.  Tagging supports over 50 communities to make better fishing and environmental decisions.

In 2026 Suntag is increasing its focus on Inshore and the reef with a goal of improving our understanding of fishing in the near shore and offshore reefs up and down the coast as well as increasing the involvement of teens in citizen science and stewardship paving the way for the next generation.
